Now Madonna Louise Ciccone, aka "the Queen of Pop" is 67 and wears glasses. Really? Huh. So the question now becomes: Can Madonna read your fundraising appeal?I often recommend thinking of an senior donor when writing a fundraising appeal or other piece of donor comms. I still do. But perhaps it's worth remembering that today's senior donors are not necessarily any particular Shade of Grey. (Sorry, I had to.) Still, they probably do wear glasses. Take for another example 60-year-old supermodel, actress, and entrepreneur Brooke Shields: Wait, Brooke too? Yes, Brooke too. As you imagine your audience, keep an open mind ... but also, please keep in mind that even the hippest of those who are most likely to worry about breaking a hip are likely to struggle if you hit them over the head with a small font and/or a wall of text. Be kind to older eyes! Could you do something like that for your donors? What might it be, I wonder and maybe you should too. In the right hands and hearts Randomly yoursFor your brain, heart, and funny bone...
Until next time: May you always remember your audience and keep in mind who they are, what they want, and what they need — including gracious readability! Grateful, Brett Cooper & Julie Cooper |

Wednesday, June 10, 2026 Dear Reader, Everybody loves a long dog. Like this: Right? And yet, many people flinch at long subject lines. What? The injustice! Okay, I get it. Short subject lines are cute and effective and don't get cut off, even in mobile. But long subject lines can be cute and effective too, even if they get cut off...

Wednesday, May 27, 2026 Dear Reader, I’ve always loved typography... ...but lately I’ve taken it to a new level. I've gone down a rabbit hole of books, online course materials, and YouTube videos. For me, typography (the art of arranging letters on a page) is like Lay’s potato chips. Once you get a taste, you just can’t stop! So I'm...

Wednesday, May 13, 2026 Hi Reader, You know how sometimes you have to learn the rules, then learn when it's better to break them? Like when you're told in school never to write a sentence fragment. Come to find out, that's only for formal writing. It's often better to sound natural and authentic, and doing that means writing how...
